Sceptre has signed a “hilarious and insightful” cartoon collection by Betty Trask Prize-winner and New Yorker cartoonist Will McPhail entitled Love & Vermin.
Senior commissioning editor Charlotte Humphery acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Gordon Wise at Curtis Brown on behalf of Esther Newberg at ICM Partners for publication on 13th October 2022.
The publisher said: “With his shrewd eye for mundane absurdities and deeply relatable urban creatures, Will McPhail is one of Britain’s most distinctive cartoonists. His cartoons, which often go viral on social media, delight in the anxieties of everyday life, skewer modern politics and capture the painful and ridiculous truths behind our behaviours.
“In his first collection, new cartoons are united with old favourites: knowing mice and eligible pigeons fill our cities, while the beloved adventures of Lady No-Kids gleefully continue. Pondering life, love and nonsense, Love & Vermin is a trove of sly wisdom and laughter.”
Will McPhail won the Betty Trask Prize in June 2021 for his debut graphic novel In. (Sceptre), the first time a graphic novel has ever won the prize.
He said of his new collection: “It’s a thrill to work with my wonderful friends at Sceptre again. I’m so proud of what we achieved together with In., my debut graphic novel, that I knew I could trust them with my most vital work yet: a bunch of drawings about sex and pigeons. Love & Vermin, baby!”
Charlotte Humphery, senior commissioning editor at Sceptre, said: “Will McPhail is an unreasonably funny person and an unreasonably talented artist. The fact that he also has an acute, almost painful, insight into the human condition is just the final straw. We are so proud to publish his debut graphic novel and we know that Will’s fans all over the world will adore Love & Vermin. This collection is a delight and a perfect, intelligent gift for friends, family or for self.”
