Sceptre has won a four-way auction for Taiwanese-American author Maggie Su’s "strange and delightful" début novel, BLOB: A Love Story.
Editorial director Charlotte Humphery bought British Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, in physical, e-book and audio formats, from Imogen Bovill at Abner Stein on behalf of Samantha Shea at Georges Borchardt, Inc. The trade paperback, e-book and audiobook editions will be published on 28th January 2025, with the hardback released on 6th February 2025.
"Vi Liu’s life is a mess," the synopsis says. "One night, drunk outside a drag club, she stumbles across a mysterious sentient blob. She takes it home, where she feeds it a diet of sugary cereal and reality TV. Slowly, she realises that she can shape the blob into her perfect man: someone attentive, outgoing and with more than a passing resemblance to Ryan Gosling. But is Bob the blob really the answer to all her problems, or a catalyst for further disaster?"
Humphery said: "I am obsessed with BLOB! It is such a sharp and distinctive novel with a brilliant surreal edge—it had me snort-laughing and sympathising in equal measures. Maggie Su’s imagination is a wonder, as is the way that she balances humour and pathos in this wonderfully weird début."
