Scholastic is partnering with the Royal College of Nursing to publish Dear Nurse: True Stories of Strength, Kindness and Skill, in celebration of the NHS’ 75th anniversary.
It will be authored by nurses and midwives, containing 44 true stories about their work, with a foreword by broadcaster and journalist Jo Whiley and featuring illustrations by two-time Kate Greenaway Medal-winner artist Michael Foreman.
World rights to the text were acquired from the RCN Foundation, by the Scholastic non-fiction team led by non-fiction publisher in brands and licensing Elizabeth Scoggins, with the assistance of Ian Downes. World rights to the illustrations were acquired by creative director Andrew Biscomb from Foreman direct. The book is slated for publication in February 2023.
“With Dear Nurse, we want to publish a love letter to all the strong, compassionate and skillful nurses and midwives who work tirelessly to care for us,” Scoggins said. “Reading some of their stories in their own words, accompanied by Michael Foreman’s remarkable illustrations, opens a window into their world that will inform, amaze and reassure young readers.”
With each copy sold, 50p will be donated to the foundation to support its work.
Deepa Korea, director of the foundation, said: “Nursing and midwifery staff play an invaluable role in keeping the public safe and well. We are excited to be able to showcase some of their incredible stories and hope that this book will perhaps encourage young readers to consider a career in these professions. We are delighted to be partnering with Scholastic on this project. The donations raised through the sale of this book will help ensure that we are able to support nursing and midwifery professionals when they need us.”
