Scholastic UK has acquired This is Me, the "heartfelt and uplifting" debut picture book from 21-year-old TV presenter George Webster.
Editorial director for illustrated books Fiz Osborne acquired world rights for two books from Alex Priestly at Alex Priestly Talent for the text, and world rights for illustrations from Chloe Morgan at Plum Pudding. The first book will publish in March 2023, with further books to follow. The deal was announced on 21st March, World Down Syndrome Day.
Written in collaboration with Claire Taylor and illustrated by Tim Budgen, the story follows a little boy called George as he tells the reader all about himself and his friends. George explains that having Down syndrome is an important part of him but does not define him. The picture book also features a cast of characters reflective of society.
“We could not be happier to collaborate with George, Claire and Tim on these hugely important picture books," Osbourne said. "Together we’re creating something so heartfelt and uplifting that will positively impact so many children. The whole process has been a wonderful and much-needed reminder of all the good that’s in the world.”
Webster is a TV presenter, actor and Mencap ambassador. Following a myth-busting video he created for BBC Bitesize on the myths of Down syndrome, he was announced as the first CBeebies presenter with the condition in September 2021.
“I’m so privileged to be joining the fantastic Scholastic company to produce these books with such talented colleagues," Webster said. "It’s very important to represent people with a disability in books and the wider media. I hope This is Me and its successors will prove that our stories need to be told for all the children and families in the world.”
Budgen, who has illustrated books including Twenty Dinosaurs at Bedtime (Scholastic) and Pugicorn (Hodder Children’s), said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be working alongside George, Claire and the Scholastic team on this fantastic project. George and Claire have written a wonderful story that reflects the importance of representation for all and I can’t wait to get started.”
