Scholastic has acquired Horrible Histories: Ghosts by author Terry Deary and illustrator Martin Brown for publication this autumn, just in time for Halloween.
Elizabeth Scoggins, publisher for non-fiction, brand and licensing at Scholastic UK, acquired world rights for the text from Terry Deary and to the illustrations from Martin Brown direct.
The publisher of the children’s history series, which has been running for nearly 30 years and includes titles such as Rotten Romans and Terrible Tudors, says it has long included spooky tales alongside foul facts, but that this is the first time the world of spirits, ghouls and ghosts will be brought to the fore.
“Get ready for a hilarious and ghoulish gallop through ancient apparitions, Tudor terrors, Georgian jiggery-pokery and much more. Expect stories about terrible tombs, phantom drummers, spooky soldiers, screaming skulls and even a ghostly chicken,” it continues.
Scoggins said Deary’s gift for vivid storytelling combined with Brown’s imaginative and witty illustrations promises to make the book “dazzle, shock and amaze readers, who will not be able to resist telling their friends, parents and teachers all these funny and scary tales”.
The first Horrible Histories books were published in 1993 and followed by dozens more including Slimy Stuarts, Gorgeous Georgians and, most recently, Horrible Histories: Right on Track.
Horrible Histories stage shows also tour the UK, with "Terrible Tudors" on at the London Garrick Theatre this summer and the popular new Horrible Histories: Terrible Thames river-ride experience running daily. The books have sold over 25 million copies worldwide.
