Writer and illustrator Michael Foreman’s “new wintertime classic”, The Snowman and the Robin, has been signed by Scholastic.
Linas Alsenas, executive editor, acquired world rights directly from Foreman, for publication in October 2023. The synopsis begins: “On a chilly evening in a London park, a plucky little robin strikes up a conversation with a snowman.
“Together they embark on a night-time adventure exploring the streets of London. From the snowy guards at Buckingham Palace, to the dazzling Christmas lights in Piccadilly Circus, to the majestic London Eye slowly revolving over the Thames, the snowman sees how wonderful the world is – even if he only has a short time to experience it.”
The publisher says The Snowman and the Robin is “resplendent with Michael Foreman’s gorgeously painted cityscapes that capture the magic of London in a love letter to his hometown", continuing that “all generations will be enchanted and transported by The Snowman and the Robin, which will be published in a stunning hardcover jacketed edition embellished with foil as the perfect Christmas gift".
In 2022, Foreman was awarded an OBE for his services to literature and he is a twice-winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal. He said: “Who doesn’t love a snowman? They are short-lived, but timeless, and the wider the smile they are given, the better – reflecting the joy of the children who made him.
“However, at the end of the day, when left alone in the dark, a snowman must feel rather sad and forlorn. It occurred to me that the Snowman needs an adventure! Each book I do with Scholastic is an adventure and this was a particularly joyful one.”
Alsenas commented: “Michael Foreman is an absolute legend in the world of children’s books, and his new story is brimming with magic, wonder and wisdom. It’s exactly the kind of book families seek out during the festive season, so I have no doubt that – like the snowman in the story – it will reappear year after year to be read again and again as a treasured family tradition.”
