Scholastic has snapped up Running Away For Beginners, the "funny and heartfelt" YA novel from Mark Illis, inspired by his cancer diagnosis as a teenager.
Former executive editor Linas Alsenas acquired world rights from Charlotte Colwill at Colwill & Peddle. The novel will be published in March 2024.
"We’re so thrilled at Scholastic’s enthusiasm and support for Mark’s wonderful book," said Colwill. "It’s such an original, heartfelt and hilarious adventure story, and we can’t wait for readers to meet Jasper and his friends."
Illis was diagnosed with cancer when he was 18-years-old and underwent chemotherapy and a life-saving leg amputation. He commented: "Running Away For Beginners takes place in the first few days after Jasper has heard he’s got cancer. I remember the shock and fear when I heard that news, a sense that my whole world was shifting. I wanted to capture some of that feeling in this novel. Jasper’s experience isn’t mine, but my experience informs this novel, gives it an emotional authenticity I think, which thrums through it. I could not be happier that Charlotte and all at Scholastic have embraced it so enthusiastically. I wish I could tell 18-year-old me that it was all going to work out pretty well in the end.”
The novel follows 15-year-old Jasper who has received a cancer diagnosis. The synopsis continues: "Treatment starts in a week, and his parents want him to carry on as normal. But Jasper knows that’s impossible, and his friends help organise a weekend trip to the seaside to get away from everything. It’ll be like running away for beginners, they joke. But as the journey goes on, nothing goes planned and everyone’s secrets begin to emerge. Jasper’s is the biggest: he’s not intending to go back home."
Fortune commented: "Mark handles a tough subject with such care and warmth – this book is a rollercoaster of emotions and rings very real and true."
