Scholastic UK has snapped up author-illustrator Denzell Dankwah’s first graphic novel, The Power Keepers.
Fiction commissioning editor Julia Sanderson acquired world rights in two books from Lorna Hemingway at Bell Lomax Moreton, winning a three-publisher auction.
The first book, which will be published in September 2024, is rooted in African folklore. It tells the story of a modern-day Ghanaian family and their community in the UK. "The Power Keepers combines relatable present-day kids with folklore-inspired superpowers as well as positive representation of ADHD and the benefits of embracing neurodivergent ways of thinking," the synopsis adds.
Dankwah said: “When creating The Power Keepers, I was inspired by many shows, comics and stories of characters facing different challenges along their journey that I consumed when I was younger. Similar to how these stories stayed with me, I hope Marcus’ story resonates with readers too!”
Sanderson commented: “From the initial pitch, it was clear what an ambitious vision Denzell had for this project and what an exciting talent he is. His artwork is slick, dynamic and distinctive, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the fresh energy and warmth he has brought to this cast of kids and their authentic, Ghanaian-folklore-infused contemporary world."
