Scotland Street Press has bought Julian Evans’ book about Russian and Ukrainan relations, Undefeatable: Odesa in Love and War.
Head of publishing Jean Fraser bought UK and Commonwealth rights from Peter Straus at RCW and will publish 1st December 2024.
Straus said: “Julian Evans is a wonderful writer who has written a powerful and personal history of Odesa. I realise there have been many books on Ukraine and Odesa but I do feel this is singular and important and offers fresh insights into the history of the conflict and its emotional impact.
"Julian marries a Ukrainian and we find that her parents are on opposite sides in the Russia-Ukraine war. This familial tension is a microcosm of the city’s continuously shifting, sometimes contradictory atmosphere, which Julian captures so vividly in this book.”
Evans has written two previous books, a travel book, Transit of Venus: Travels in the Pacific (Eland Publishing) and a life of Norman Lewis, Semi-Invisible Man (Jonathan Cape).
