Scribe's children’s picture book imprint Scribble has acquired Nina, a "illuminating and defining" biography of Nina Simone, from author Traci N Todd and illustrator Christian Robinson.
Miriam Rosenbloom, publisher, acquired UK rights from Penguin Random House North America, for publication in October 2021.
Nina: A Story of Nina Simone will tell the story of Eunice Waymon, who grew up to become Nina Simone and share her "bold, defiant, and exultant legacy with a new generation", Scribe said. The picture book will take readers through Simone's life from the piano stool she shared with her father in her childhood home to bars and concert halls. The book will also learn about the singer's vital role in the Civil Rights Movement, singing in protest against racial inequality and discrimination.
Todd (pictured above) is an author and editor currently living in New York. Robinson is the illustrator of Matt De La Pena's Last Stop on Market Street (G P Putnam's Sons) and The Bench (Puffin) by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex. He is also the author and illustrator of You Matter (S&S Children's).
