September Publishing has scooped world English language rights to Underwing: In Search of Witches’ Familiars and Other Magical Animals, Jennifer Lane’s book about animals in witchcraft and pagan belief systems.
Lane’s third book with September Publishing was acquired by publisher Hannah MacDonald from Charlotte Ayteo at Greyhound Literary, and will publish in autumn 2024.
Lane is the author of The Wheel, a memoir of her recovery from anxiety and her interest in witchcraft, which has given her a TikTok following and a profile as “a young green witch”. She has also written The Witch’s Survival Guide, which is described by the publisher as “a practical guide to elemental spells to help with burnout and stress,” and publishes late April 2022.
MacDonald said: “We are delighted to be working into the future with Jennifer on Underwing. With her evocative writing style and accessible, fresh take on modern witchcraft Jenn is a rare combination of talented nature writer and practising green witch. The writer’s witch, if you like.
"Underwing is a journey with only animal destinations – born from the importance of animals in pagan faiths, the urgency of our connections to the non-human community and the deeply felt affection we have with those beloved, individual creatures which fascinate and even define us.”
