TV presenter and vet James Greenwood’s debut book, For the Love of Animals, has gone to Seven Dials.
Vicky Eribo, executive publisher, and Ru Merritt, former senior commissioning editor, acquired world rights from Rosemary Scoular of United Agents, for publication in hardback, e-book and audiobook (narrated by the author) on 6th July.
The synopsis reads: “Growing up in Yorkshire and with farming blood in his genes, James Greenwood always knew he would end up as a vet. Animals have been part of James’ life for as long as he can remember, from pulling lambs on a hilltop farm as a child and having stick insects crawling out of his school uniform in class, to renting a flat behind a zoo in Jersey and finding himself treating a newborn baby elephant as a newly qualified vet.”
The book, “written with Greenwood’s trademark warmth and humour", offers an insight into the world of veterinary medicine and goes deep into his relationship with his much-missed one-eyed labrador, Oliver, the synopsis continues.
“However, the path to realising his childhood ambition has not always been easy and at times he has questioned whether it truly is the best job in the world. Through all the challenging lows and extraordinary highs, it has been the animals themselves that have spurred James on to want to continue vetting and confirm his calling as a GP vet. Warm, poignant and full of heart, For the Love Of Animals is both a beautiful tribute to the role animals play in our lives and a rare glimpse into what it’s really like to be a vet.”
Eribo said: “It is an absolute joy to have the opportunity to work with James on his first book. The story of his early years as a vet is charming, heartfelt and warm but also remarkably honest and at times quite surprising. It is a beautiful narrative, brilliantly told."
Greenwood, who has been resident vet on CBBC’s The Pets Factor, BBC One’s Morning Live and ITV’s The Pet Show, said: “Reflecting back on over 15 years as a frontline vet, with my story I hope to take you behind the scenes to show what it is really like. I hope it will make you smile, perhaps laugh, it might challenge you, and it may even bring an occasional tear to the eye. But more than anything I hope it will bring some reassurance that as vets we will always be there for you and your pets. As a vet and a pet owner, I am all too aware that looking after our animals comes with great responsibility—and we are all in it together, all for the love of animals.”
