Viking has signed a two-book deal with Josie Silver with the first novel tipped as “a sumptuously cosy seasonal love story” about a New York gelateria full of secrets.
Harriet Bourton, publishing director, acquired world all-language rights to two new novels from Nelle Andrew at Rachel Mills Literary Agency. North American and Canadian rights to both books were bought by Hilary Teeman at Ballantine.
Viking will publish A Winter in New York in paperback, e-book and audiobook in October 2023, with a second untitled novel scheduled for October 2024.
A Winter In New York is billed as “a sumptuously cosy seasonal love story following Iris, who moves to New York to restart her culinary career and feels like she’s living in a movie,” according to Viking. “She’s watched them all – usually while eating her mother’s homemade vanilla ice cream. It’s a secret recipe, and now she is the only one who has it.
"Then Iris stumbles upon a little gelateria, Belotti’s. ‘One family, one flavour’ reads the family slogan above the door. A door that Iris has seen before: in a photo that lives in the same box that keeps her mother’s treasured recipe safe. Inside Iris finds Gio: a man with his own family secrets and a heart just as broken as Iris’. So can the two of them untangle their pasts and find love in the present?”
Silver’s debut One Day in December (Viking) will be adapted as a drama series by Netflix, with Drake Doremus directing and starring Lucy Boynton, as reported last month in Deadline. The author has sold books worth £536,000, according to Nielsen BookScan, with her bestseller One Day in December, on 73,443 copies sold.
Bourton said: “Josie is the queen of the ‘what if?’ romance, and this new novel set in sparkling wintertime New York is her most delicious love story yet. A cross between ’While You Were Sleeping’ and ’Serendipity’, readers are going to love this comforting rom-com that captures the very best ingredients of all their favourite festive movies.”
Silver said: “I love escaping into the comforting world of romance, where new love, friendships and the discovery of the best frozen gelato in New York are always a possibility. I’m so happy to continue working with the teams at Viking UK and Ballantine US on these two new novels."
