Simon & Schuster Children’s has acquired the rights to the new picture book What’s That Noise? written by Charlie Higson and illustrated by Nadia Shireen. World rights in the text were acquired by Helen Mackenzie Smith, picture books publisher at Simon & Schuster Children’s Books, from Alexandra Cann at Alexandra Cann Representation, while illustration rights were acquired from Jo Unwin at Jo Unwin Literary Agency.
The "raucously loud and anarchic story about Bob, his box and the joy of making as much noise as you possibly can" is scheduled for release in May 2025.
Mackenzie Smith said: "Charlie and Nadia are a picture-book match made in heaven, and this joyful book is the perfect expression of their brilliant brains—as well as being perfect for anyone who’s ever loved the box more than the thing that came in it. We consider ourselves immensely lucky to be publishing it at Simon & Schuster Children’s Books."
Higson said: "I’ve known Nadia for a few years and have been a massive fan of her work for even longer. She’s so funny and talented, and has her own unique style. I felt very honoured when she asked me if I had any interest in collaborating on a book together, and working with her to make it has been a total joy. Can I also add that we are both in the same pub quiz team and she’s unbeatable in a music round…"
Shireen said: "I’ve known Charlie for a very long time and though he’s an excellent writer, I was slightly hoping he’d be rubbish at picture books so I could feel superior. But annoyingly, his writing is brilliant, original and funny. I’m absolutely delighted to be on board."
