Simon & Schuster Children’s Books has seized a YA fantasy series by the "Booktok sensation" Andy Darcy Theo.
Editorial director Yasmin Morrissey acquired world rights directly from the author in a two-book deal. The Light That Blinds Us will publish in paperback in April 2024, supported by a digital marketing campaign building on the author’s online profile.
Described as "high-stakes, speculative fantasy", the series explores themes of mental health, adventure and found family.
The synopsis says: "After a childhood haunted by disturbing hallucinations of the Shadow Man, Alexis Michaels’s only comfort is the blue amulet he’s had since before he can remember. But when a trip to Stonehenge unites him with three others carrying similar gems, there is a strange affinity that Alexis cannot ignore."
Morrissey said: "Andy is a unique and compelling voice in the YA fantasy space, and he brings these tropes to life with imagination and intrigue. The Light That Blinds Us delivers on every level – with intricate plotting, breathtaking adventure, captivating characters and a dark and thought-provoking perspective on psychosis. The YA community are going to love this fresh take on the Found Family trope, and we are so proud that Andy has ’chosen’ S&S to be his publishing home."
Theo added: "This book is my everything – I have been writing this series for over a decade and the story and characters now feel part of me. I am so incredibly excited to be publishing with Simon & Schuster – it’s an honour to be working with such a driven and passionate team. Also, this wouldn’t have been possible without the loyal support of BookTok cheering me on – I can’t thank them enough for making my dreams come true."
