Sphere has acquired the first book by cyclist blogger Jools Walker, known online as Lady Velo.
The "part guide, part memoir", called Back in the Frame, narrates Walker's story of returning to cycling aged 28 after a 10-year absence from the saddle, persevering in spite of depression and, in her early thirties, a mini-stroke. Her agent, Jo Bell, called it "a quest for joy on a bike from a truly inspiring lady".
It also promises to provide practical advice and introduce the reader to "female trailblazers making their mark on the cycling industry" with whom she had ridden.
Commissioning editor Rhiannon Smith acquired world rights in Back in the Frame from Jo Bell at Bell Lomax Moreton, in conjunction with Meryl Hoffman Management. Sphere will publish in trade paperback and e-book in April 2018.
Smith said: "It’s no surprise to me that Jools is inundated with speaking requests, as the way she talks about cycling – be it as a sport, a pastime or for commuting – is wonderfully inspiring. I can’t wait for her to translate that enthusiasm and guidance into a book, and am so excited to be working with her on Back in the Frame. There is a huge gap for Jools’ book among cyclists – especially female cyclists and aspiring cyclists."
Walker said: "The journey cycling has taken me on has quite literally changed my life, so to be able to share it and hopefully inspire others to join me on two wheels is a new chapter in this on-going adventure."
