Sphere has signed an “escapist” novel from debut author Catherine Mangan in a two-book deal.
Viola Hayden, commissioning editor for Sphere Fiction, acquired world English language rights for the two novels from Hannah Weatherill at Northbank Talent Management. The first book The Italian Escape will be published in spring 2020.
Hayden said: “The moment Niamh stepped aboard the ferry to Portofino I knew this book would capture my heart and imagination entirely. The sparkling sea and sun, the delicious food and the Aperol Spritz transports you to Niamh’s side. Catherine has written a truly wonderful escapist novel, through which we can all live the dream and open a wine bar on the coast of Italy.”
According to the publisher, the debut novel will follow “newly and unexpectedly single Niamh Kelly, as she makes the drastic decision to leave Dublin behind her and move to Italy’s Ligurian coast.”
Mangan added: “When I heard that Viola and the team at Sphere would publish my first novel, it was quite literally a long-held dream come true! Viola’s enthusiasm and support has been overwhelming and I’m beyond excited to embark on this new journey together.”
Weatherill said: “We’re thrilled that The Italian Escape has found its ideal home with Viola and the Sphere team. Catherine has created the perfect summer read – a fresh take on the escapist Italy-set novel, packed full of strong, witty, relatable women – and we’re excited to follow up on international interest at the Frankfurt Book Fair.”
