Sphere, Little, Brown Book Group has acquired the memoir of former England and Man City WFC captain, Steph Houghton.
World English rights were acquired from David Luxton of David Luxton Associates and the book will publish on 7th November 2024. This will be the first acquisition for editor Kelly Ellis in her new role as publisher for Sphere non-fiction.
Leading from the Back recounts the highs and lows Steph has been through to make it to the top of her game as England captain, star of the London Olympics and Man City stalwart, via Sunderland, Leeds and Arsenal.
Houghton achieved 121 caps for the Lionesses, and in her memoir she shares the story of her career from her dreams of becoming professional as a young girl in Sunderland to making history at the Olympics and lifting numerous cups for Man City.
Houghton said: "I’m so excited to be releasing my autobiography, Leading from the Back, with the help of the wonderful team at Sphere. It’s a dream come true to be able to tell you the story of my journey from the bottom to the very top of women’s football. In my own words, I relive the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in both my professional and personal life. From captaining England in major tournaments and lifting trophies, to the adversity and setbacks of injuries and missing key matches, as well as trying to change the professionalism of our sport along the way. I hope this book gives you an insight into the work it takes, the sacrifices you make to achieve your dreams, the struggles along the way, and most importantly an insight into me as a wife and as a person."
Ellis said: "Steph Houghton is without a doubt an icon of women’s football and, here at Sphere, we could not be prouder to be publishing her story. Despite blazing a trail for girls and women around the world, Steph remains incredibly humble and has been keen to demonstrate that the road to success for herself and her peers has been far from all glory. It’s been a journey with many ups and down. It is a privilege to help Steph capture her story and legacy on the page."
