Square Peg has unveiled Violet Bakery founder Claire Ptak’s fifth cookbook, Love is a Pink Cake, inspired by the artist Andy Warhol’s series of the same name.
Rowan Yapp, former editorial director, acquired UK and Commonwealth excluding Canada rights from Felicity Blunt at Curtis Brown for publication on 6th April.
Ptak worked as a pastry chef at the world-renowned Chez Panisse before moving to London from North Carolina in 2005 where she opened the Violet Bakery in 2010. In 2018, she was commissioned to make the wedding cake for Prince Harry and Megan Markle’s wedding.
Her previous books are The Home-Made Sweet Shop (Aquamarine), Leon: Happy Baking (Conran), The Whoopie Pie Book (Square Peg) and The Violet Bakery Cookbook (Square Peg).
The synopsis for Love is a Pink Cake reads: “Inspired by the best ingredients found in her native Northern California and her adopted home in England—from fresh-picked berries to peaches straight from the orchard_these 85 recipes for cakes, cookies, desserts and savoury treats showcase how seasonal local produce is the key to creative, memorable and delicious homemade bakes.”
Marianne Tatepo, publishing director of Square Peg, said: “From Nigel Slater to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Claire’s pioneering baking has won the hearts of readers and bakers on both sides of the pond, her Violet Bakery becoming a London institution."
“In this new collection of recipes, stories and baking tips, she distils the wisdom and passion from two decades of creative disruption as a cook and business owner. Replete with beautiful film and digital photography shot across England and California, Love is A Pink Cake is a potent declaration of a love for food and creativityand those closest to us. I want to press it into the hands of every person I hold dear. Claire’s blend of arresting prose and irresistible, original recipes for all occasions is a unique celebration of seasonal baking."
Ptak said: “I come from Northern California, where baking seasonally and for flavour is just part of my DNA. I really wanted to share in this book how that foundation along with a lifelong practice has translated into my popular London business. I’m so excited to finally be releasing this very personal book which took nearly five years to write and photograph. It’s the third time I’ve worked with Square Peg and Vintage and I can’t wait for bakers worldwide to try these recipes in their own homes, encouraging them to think about baking in this way, with less stress and more pleasure in the process. Giving someone a homemade cake is, after all, an act of love.”
