Simon & Schuster Children’s Books has won an eight-way auction for Hari Conner’s debut YA graphic novel I Shall Never Fall in Love.
Ali Dougal, publishing director, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Louise Lamont at Luigi Bonomi Associates on behalf of Jessica Mileo at InkWell Management. Simon & Schuster will publish in full-colour paperback in October 2024, simultaneously with HarperCollins US, supported by a “far-reaching” marketing and PR campaign. InkWell has also sold Italian rights (HarperCollins Italia) and Spanish rights (Planeta Mexico).
I Shall Never Fall In Love is a regency rom-com, which follows a group of friends coming of age and dealing with first loves, secret crushes and awkward proposals.
Conner is a transmasc comic artist based in Scotland and author of the LGBT romance webcomic Finding Home.
Dougal said: “It is a truth universally acknowledged that I cannot resist a swoonsome love story, and Hari Conner’s exquisite art, their loveable characters, their exceptional attention to detail, have truly won my heart. Hari has already been making waves on the webcomics scene and I Shall Never Fall in Love, with its timely and relatable themes, is going to catapult them into the book market as an exciting new star. We’re excited to grow our graphic novel publishing with I Shall Never Fall in Love, and proud to be publishing Hari on our list of YA bestsellers.”
Conner added: “The amount of interest in the book has been so exciting — and on home turf, too — it’s kind of a dream. I have so much love for graphic novels and queer characters, but growing up I thought neither would ever really be possible in mainstream publishing. I’m also interested in telling stories about Britain’s past in a thoughtful way, and I hope all these things continue to grow in UK books! I was really impressed by S&S’ vision and I’m thrilled to have a chance to get this story out to more people.”
