Simon & Schuster Children’s Books has acquired a “striking, compassionate” picture book from the author Helen Docherty and illustrator David Roberts.
Lara Hancock, previously editorial director for children’s picture books. acquired world rights to the text of Someone Just Like You from Penny Holroyde. Helen Mackenzie Smith, picture books publisher, bought world rights in the illustrations from Christine Isteed at Artist Partners for David Roberts. US rights were sold at Frankfurt to Simon & Schuster US.
The book is described as deeply empathetic and explores the many things we have in common despite our differences. Laura Padoan of UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, said: “Someone Just Like You is absolutely beautiful. Exquisitely illustrated, with an important message of solidarity and compassion written in an engaging way that children will really connect with.”
Someone Just Like You will be supported by an "extensive" marketing and PR campaign. It publishes on 28th September in hardback with paperback to follow in 2024.
Mackenzie Smith said: “We could not be prouder to be publishing this unique picture book. Helen’s text conveys deep and complex emotions in such a direct, clear way, while David’s extraordinary illustrations could not be more perfect, encouraging the reader to look again from a new angle. It’s very, very special.”
Docherty said: “Years ago, I had the privilege of working with refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol. I felt a strong connection with many of them. I wrote this story in response to the ongoing refugee crisis, inspired by the words of Jo Cox: ‘We have far more in common with each other than things that divide us.’ Now, more than ever, we need to nurture empathy with others and an understanding of our common humanity.”
Roberts said: “It’s been so lovely to draw laughter and curiosity and kindness in this book that celebrates the things we have in common alongside the things that make us different.”
