Simon & Schuster Children’s UK has signed three picture books from illustrator Adam Beer in a "significant" deal, incuding two titles which will be published in partnership with author Anna Kemp.
Helen Mackenzie Smith, picture books editorial director, bought world rights to three titles from Beer from Mandy Suhr at Miles Stott Children’s Literary Agency. Caroline Walsh at David Higham Associates negotiated the deal on behalf of Kemp.
The first title in the deal, Mammoth, will tell the story of a mammoth who wakes up in the modern world and sets off to the big city in search of his herd. The title will be published in June 2021 and will launch the "major" partnership between the duo, with a second title to follow. The third book in the deal will be a solo project from Beer.
Mackenzie Smith said: "We are so excited to welcome Adam Beer to our flourishing picture book list here at S&S. We have huge ambitions both for the new powerhouse partnership with the brilliant Anna Kemp and for Adam’s solo career. He is truly a picture book talent to watch!"
Beer commented: "I couldn’t have found a better place to launch my picture book career than at Simon & Schuster, where the team has been really supportive and brought out the best in my illustration. Anna’s text for Mammoth had me hooked straight away and I can’t wait to work with her again! I hope everyone loves this story as much as I do."
Kemp added: "Adam’s artwork shows that special combination of humour and heart. We really feel for this poor, confused mega beast. But we can also laugh at his bungles and celebrate when he finally finds his 'herd'."
Kemp has previously published Dogs Don't Do Ballet (2010) and The Worst Princess (2012) with Simon & Schuster Children's Books.
