Swift Press has signed I Can’t Stop Thinking About VAR, a "crucial and controversial" title on video assistant referee (VAR) in football, from Daisy Christodoulou.
Publisher Mark Richards acquired world rights directly from the author for publication on 7th November 2024.
According to the publisher, this is the first book "to grapple with what VAR is trying to do, to understand why it is failing and what that ultimately tells us about both the game of football and the society we live in".
Christodoulou examines the nature of authority, rationality and technology to consider these questions and whether VAR is fixable.
Christodoulou said: "VAR was supposed to bring more fairness and clarity to football, but in many ways it’s done the opposite. What fascinates me is how something designed to eliminate error has instead introduced new kinds of uncertainty and frustration. In exploring these issues, I realised that what’s happening with VAR isn’t just about football – it’s about how we interact with technology and our attitudes to progress and change."
Richards added: "Daisy Christodoulou brings her extraordinary intelligence and clarity of thought to elucidate exactly why VAR has been so difficult to implement well, and why football seems to be having so many problems while other sports have taken it in their stride."
