Swift Press has signed The New China Playbook: Beyond Socialism and Capitalism, a new "revelatory" book on China’s economy by economist and professor Keyu Jin.
Publisher Mark Richards acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Sabila Khan at Penguin Random House US. Swift will "rush-publish" with the book due for publication on 20th July.
Already published in the US to "critical acclaim", The New China Playbook sets out to explain "China’s unique hybrid economic system" and takes a "holistic view" of the country’s history and culture "to replace the dated assumptions still held by many in the West". Previous UK prime minister Tony Blair hailed the book as "essential reading".
Jin is a renowned economist and holds a Bachelors, Masters and PhD in economics from Harvard University and is currently a professor at the London School of Economics, dividing her time between London and Beijing. She commented: "I’m pleased that Swift will be publishing The New China Playbook in the UK and Commonwealth. The importance of seeing each other’s perspectives and recognising the difference in ethos, culture and history between China and the West has never been as urgent as today. A more nuanced understanding and an openness of the mind will be critical for avoiding man-made conflicts of epochal scale."
Richards added: "The New China Playbook is a revelatory book about how China’s economy actually functions, from someone who is almost uniquely able to describe it: Keyu Jin grew up in China and still spends half her time there, so knows it from the inside; but her stellar academic career and work for international organisations including the IMF and World Bank has given her an outsider’s perspective as well. This combination of insider and outsider perspectives makes the book indispensable for anyone interested in China."
