Profile Books has signed Moneyland: Where the Rich Go to Escape Democracy, journalist Oliver Bullough’s investigation into a global system of tax evasion.
The deal follows the revelation of the Panama Papers currently dominating news headlines around the world.
Editorial director Ed Lake acquired world rights (excluding UK audio) to the title from Karolina Sutton at Curtis Brown.
The publisher said: "Today, thanks to the Panama Papers, the headlines are filled with revelations of tax evasion by international elites. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Bullough reveals a global system in which oligarchs can rob their home countries then bask in comfort as Western democracies bend over backwards to shelter them. The upshot is that rich nations are in a race to process stolen goods – even if that means undermining their own institutions and selling out their people. And yet as Bullough argues, it doesn’t have to be this way."
Bullough said: “I am very excited to be working with Profile, who are the perfect publishers for a book on a subject that gets more urgent by the day. I have got an amazing story to tell, which will both shock and amaze everyone who reads it.”
Lake said: “The story of how the world’s criminal elites got us all wrapped round their fingers could hardly be more timely. I am thrilled that Oliver Bullough, a magnificent journalist with vast experience at both ends of the great kleptocrat delivery chain, is going to tell it.”
A veteran foreign correspondent, Bullough, is the author of two books on Russia and the former Soviet Union: The Last Man in Russia and Let Our Fame Be Great (published by Penguin).
His most recent articles have appeared in the Guardian, GQ and Granta. He also makes documentaries for BBC Radio 4 and Vice.
