Templar has scored Raising the Roof, an "approachable" introduction to classical music, the debut book from composer Jack Pepper and illustrator Michele Bruttomesso.
Jo McInerney, former head of Big Picture Press, acquired world rights from Pepper’s former agent at Kruger Cowne. Pepper is now represented by Jackie Gill at Jackie Gill Management. The book will be published in hardback on 6th June 2024.
Raising the Roof features 20 composers, the key sounds and concepts of classical music and includes a playlist covering 1,000 years of "classical music hits" with "stand-out" illustrations.
"Raising the Roof is one of the most exciting projects I’ve been involved with," said Bruttomesso. "Music has always influenced my work, but this book gave me the opportunity to completely immerse myself in the world of these immense composers."
Pepper is one of the UK’s youngest commissioned composers, having written for the Royal Opera House, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
He commented: "I’m happy to see my debut book come to life, having pitched the idea when I was 18. All my work, as composer, radio presenter and writer, comes back to a desire to introduce the widest possible audience to the colourful and timeless world of classical music. As a composer, I’ve had the privilege of seeing behind the curtain – and this book aims to take you there, too.”
Carly Blake, senior commissioning editor, began working on Raising the Roof soon after the acquisition, and added: “We could not be more delighted to be publishing Jack Pepper’s extraordinary debut Raising the Roof! Jack presents the world of classical music in a dazzling new light with informality, humour and infectious enthusiasm.”
