The Borough Press, an imprint of HarperCollins, has won the rights to the debut from Rebecca Fallon in a three-way auction. Jo Thompson, commissioning editor at The Borough Press, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Family Drama at auction from Rosie Pierce and Felicity Blunt of Curtis Brown. North American rights were sold, in a pre-empt, by Rebecca Gradinger of United Talent to Carina Guiterman for the Simon & Schuster flagship imprint of S&S.
The synopsis reads: "Family Drama charts the life and death of Susan Bliss, a young mother torn between her family and her career as a minor soap star. After Susan’s death, her husband Al decides to conceal her celebrity from their young twins, but in the absence of truth, the twins spin off in different directions. Sebastian turns to destructive artistry and Viola develops an obsession with her mother’s charismatic co-star—an obsession that grows when they meet."
Thompson said: "Rebecca Fallon is such an incredible talent, a writer who can capture relationships in that far-seeing, kaleidoscopic, addictive way that reminds me of many of my favourite authors: Maggie O’Farrell, Anne Tyler, Celeste Ng. This book marks an exciting literary debut and I really couldn’t be more proud to be bringing her to Borough."
Fallon said: "I could not have dreamt of a better UK home for Family Drama than The Borough Press. Jo brings such wisdom and is the perfect champion for these lost, loving characters and I can’t wait to work with her to bring them into the world!"
