The Borough Press, an imprint of HarperCollins, has won the rights to the debut from Ahana Virdi in a two-way auction.
The Borough Press’ Suzie Dooré, editor at large, won the rights to Sour Fruit, in a UK and Commonwealth rights deal (excluding Canada), brokered by Cara Lee Simpson at Susanna Lea Associates.
The synopsis reads: "Sour Fruit is a dark and compelling lead literary debut about Avni, a young woman whose appetites threaten to overwhelm her. Grieving over the unexplained death of her girlfriend and trapped in a spiral of bad casual sex and self-loathing, she is finding it increasingly hard to suppress her craving for something unspeakable."
Virdi said: "I am so excited to be published by The Borough Press. I feel incredibly lucky to be working with a team that is so passionate and talented and has such an amazing vision for my book."
Dooré said: "Ahana’s voice exploded from the page when I first read this, and I knew I had to publish it. It’s a blisteringly fresh take on the hugely popular ’sad girl’ sub-genre—Ahana is a true original with a very bright future."
Simpson said: "We are so excited to have found the perfect home for Sour Fruit with Suzie and the team at Borough. Their plans are as wild and creative as the book itself, and we can’t wait to work together to bring readers to this remarkable new voice in literary fiction."
