The Bridge Street Press has landed Myths of Geography: And How They Shape Our World by associate professor at the University of Birmingham Paul Richardson.
Publisher Sameer Rahim bought world English rights in a "major" pre-empt from Tom Killingbeck at A M Heath. The book is scheduled for publication in autumn 2024. US rights have been acquired by Peter Joseph at Hanover Square Press.
Myths of Geography is an "authoritative riposte to the trend for geographical determinism". In 10 chapters Richardson "punctures some long-held assumptions: the myth of the border and building walls between nations; the myth of the continents; and the myth of China’s New Silk Road".
Richardson said: “I’m thrilled to be working with Bridge Street Press on this book. I knew immediately that Sameer had a shared passion for this project and that he understood exactly what I was trying to do with a book that will change the way its readers see the world. This is an immensely exciting collaboration, which comes at a moment when there is a renewed urgency to understand the world and the myths of geography that shape it.”
Rahim added: “Within hours of reading this proposal I was on the phone to Tom trying to pre-empt Paul’s book. Paul’s expertise, strong argument and engaging writing style make this a vital work for anyone who wants to understand that the map is indeed not the territory. I can’t wait to publish it.”
