The History Press has signed Shelf Life: A Journey Through the Past, Present & Future of Bookselling and Publishing in Britain by former bookseller and industry professional, Michael Robb.
Commissioning editor Claire Hartley acquired world English-language rights from Thomas Cull at Cull & Co Literary Agency for publication in February 2025.
"A love letter to the industry", Shelf Life explores over 200 years of bookselling and publishing and delves into the "seismic changes of the past 40 years and reflects on the current state of the industry". The book will also look ahead to the challenges and opportunities the industry is facing.
Robb commented: "Books and bookshops have always been an important part of my life. I feel incredibly fortunate that I have worked with books for 40 years, first as a bookseller and then on the publishing side. During that time I have witnessed first-hand the huge changes that our industry has undergone and wanted to document this from my viewpoint… I hope this book will prompt many discussions within the trade. This is a wonderful business full of hard-working and passionate people and I hope I do justice to it in Shelf Life."
Hartley added: "Michael has been able to capture and celebrate our industry in a narrative that is full to the brim with interesting facts, insights from leading players and enriched with personal anecdotes. The story within Shelf Life will contribute to this popular genre in a new way by exploring the past, present and future challenges and opportunities peculiar to our trade."
