Tinder Press buys two novels from US
Headline’s Tinder Press imprint has bought two novels from the US, The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin and Gather the Daughters by Jennie Melamed.
Associate publisher Leah Woodburn acquired the novels, acquiring British Commonwealth rights to The Immortalists from WME, and British Commonwealth rights to Gather the Daughters from Nancy Wiese at Little, Brown who will publish the book in the US on their Lee Boudreaux Books imprint.
Benjamin's The Immortalists, publishing in early 2018, was described by Woodburn as "a big book in every way". It begins in a grotty tenement building in New York, 1969, when four young siblings visit a fortune-teller who predicts the date that they will each die. The narrative then fans out to show how they each live with the supposed knowledge they’re given that day. US rights were bought by Sally Kim at Penguin Putnam in the US, after a "hotly contested auction".
The second acquisition is Melamed's debut novel Gather the Daughters, a "powerful and unsettling" story about four girls living in an end-of-the-world cult, who attempt to lead an uprising. Woodburn said, "There’s much about this story that’s chilling, and yet, for all its darkness, it manages to be hugely moving and human too. It had me mesmerised." Tinder Press will publish in June 2017.
