Headline’s Tinder Press has acquired Literary Hub staffer Jessie Gaynor’s "bitingly funny" and "whip-smart" debut novel The Glow.
In her first acquisition for Tinder Press, assistant editor Ellie Freedman acquired the novel from Emma Leong at Janklow & Nesbit UK, on behalf of Marya Spence at Janklow & Nesbit US, to be published on 22nd June 2023. US rights have been acquired by Clio Seraphim at Random House, who will publish simultaneously.
The publisher describes The Glow as a “whip-smart send-up of the wellness industry that follows a young publicist as she attempts to save her job by turning a retreat centre and its charismatic guru into the hot new self-care brand."
Its synopsis continues: “Bitingly funny and unafraid of modern contradiction, it interrogates our desire to belong, the trick mirror of social media and capitalist mythology, and offers a wicked takedown of ‘Girlboss’ culture."
Gaynor, senior editor of social media at Literary Hub, said: "Tinder Press is home to a vast array of dauntingly great books, and I’m absolutely thrilled that The Glow has found a home here.
“This book was born from frustration with the ubiquity of wellness culture (often as a substitute for actual health and well-being), and though I wouldn’t wish the US healthcare system on anyone, I very much hope The Glow resonates with UK readers.”
Freedman commented: “From the moment I read the first page of The Glow, I knew I wanted it to be my first acquisition at Tinder Press.
“It has the sharp intelligence and self-awareness that you’d hope for in a satirical novel, but I also could not stop laughing – it is genuinely funny, in a way that makes you want to read out sentences to the person sitting next to you. Jessie is an extraordinary writer, one who knows what conversations we are and should be having.”
