Headline’s Tinder Press imprint has acquired a third novel from Eowyn Ivey, which centres on the story of a young woman who falls in love with a recluse and his off-grid way of life.
Publisher Mary-Anne Harrington acquired UK and Commonwealth rights to Bear Story from Lorella Belli at LBA, on behalf of Jeff Kleinman at Folio Literary. Tinder Press will publish in February 2025, simultaneously with Random House in the United States, where rights were acquired by Andrea Walker, who was Ivey’s editor for The Snow Child.
The synopsis to the book says: “When she follows him into the mountains with her six-year-old daughter, she discovers a life more beautiful, wild and dangerous than she could ever have imagined. Set in the same mythical Alaskan landscape as Ivey’s previous novels, Bear Story explores life and death in the outskirts of civilization, the love between a mother and daughter, and the permanent scars of loss. "
Ivey is the author of The Snow Child, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Her second novel, To the Bright Edge of the World, was longlisted for the International Dublin Literary Award and was shortlisted for the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Award. Both were published under the Headline Review imprint.
Ivey said: “I set out wanting to subvert the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale into something more visceral and honest. But this is by far my most personal novel, and I was writing directly into the deepest fears of my childhood growing up in Alaska.”
Harrington said: “Launching Eowyn Ivey’s The Snow Child straight into the UK bestseller list has been one of the highlights of my career. There are few writers who know how to cast a narrative spell the way Eowyn does, or to bring wild places to such unforgettable life on the page. I’m thrilled to be bringing Eowyn to Tinder Press with a new novel I know will stop readers and booksellers in their tracks.”
