Titan Books has snapped up a two-book deal with Gabriella Buba for Buba’s "stunning" Filipino inspired fantasy duology.
Fiction editor Katie Dent acquired world English rights from Ramona Pina at BookEnds Literary Agency. Saints of Storm and Sorrow, the first book in the deal will be published June 2024 with the as yet untitled sequel following in June 2025.
"I was captivated by Saints of Storm and Sorrow and the incredible world Gabriella has created with intricate elemental magic and a powerful exploration of the struggle for religious freedom," said Pina. "Once I began reading, I was unable to put the book down."
Pitched for fans of R F Kuang’s The Poppy War (HarperVoyager) and Tasha Suri’s The Jasmine Throne (Orbit), Saints of Storm and Sorrow is an "enthralling epic fantasy in which a nun concealing a goddess-given gift is transformed into a lightning rod her of her people’s struggle against colonisation".
Dent commented: "I fell in love with the series’ world and characters, and the quality of Gabriella’s writing blew me away. This is a world full of magic, of vengeful goddesses and women who are no longer willing to wait for justice. I’m can’t wait for readers to discover this wonderfully original duology."
Buba said: "Saints of Storm and Sorrow was written for girls who grew up forced to swallow their truths like broken glass. I hope it helps bi-racial, bi-sexual Filipinas feel seen and speak to the grief caused by colonisation and assimilation, but also the healing found in real community."
