Tor UK has scooped TikTok star Carissa Broadbent’s duology, described as "Hunger Games with vampires", alongside Tor USA’s new romance list, Bramble.
Publishing director Gillian Green acquired UK and British Commonwealth (excluding Canada) print rights only from Chris Scheina, assistant director for rights at Macmillan USA. Tor UK will publish The Serpent and the Wings of Night, the first book in the duology, in hardback and trade paperback in December 2023, to be followed by The Ashes and the Star-Crossed King in July 2024.
Of The Serpent and the Wings of Night, the synopsis says: "In book one the adopted human daughter of a vampire king must compete in a blood thirsty battle to win the favour of the goddess of death, forcing a dangerous alliance with a vampire opponent who could complicate her path to victory." It adds: "The dark romantasy duology has swiftly become a huge sensation on TikTok with over 23.8 million view on one hashtag alone. The books will appeal to fans of Sarah J Maas, Jennifer L Armentrout, and Rebecca Yarros."
Green said: "Last year was a record year for Tor under Bella’s leadership and this year is poised to be even bigger. Dark romantasy is also one of the hottest genres at the moment and Carissa Broadbent is poised to become one of its biggest stars.
"She already had a legion of fans via BookTok who have devoured this duology and, as part of our ambitious plans for growth, we can’t wait to bring her books to an even wider readership on Tor. Filled with heart-wrenching romance, dark magic and blood thirsty intrigue, Carissa’s brilliant series is quite simply The Hunger Games with vampires."
Broadbent commented: "I’m so thrilled to be working with Gillian and the fantastic team at Tor UK to bring The Serpent and the Wings of Night and The Ashes and the Star-Cursed King to the UK and Commonwealth. As a huge fan of so many Tor authors, I can’t imagine a better partner in bringing these books to a broader readership across the pond."
