Tor, an imprint of Pan Macmillan, has signed a 10-book deal with New York Times bestselling science-fiction author John Scalzi for a “large” seven-figure advance.
This was a joint world-rights acquisition with Tor’s US sister imprint at the Tor Publishing Group. Tor has now acquired 10 more books from the award-winning author. Tor UK publisher Bella Pagan and Tor Publishing Group’s Patrick Nielsen Hayden, vice president and editor-at-large, acquired the deal from agent Ethan Ellenberg of New York’s Ethan Ellenberg Literary Agency. The deal included a “large” seven-figure advance and “marks another enthusiastic long-term commitment from John Scalzi’s publishers”, Tor said.
Tor UK will match publication dates with Tor US for this new deal. Scalzi’s next book, When the Moon Hits Your Eye (Tor), will be published in March 2025.
The American author said: “It’s rare in publishing to get anything close to continuity—authors go from one publishing house to the next. So I’m especially proud that this contract not only extends my two-decade association with Tor Books, but gives us an opportunity to build on what’s come before, and make what comes next even better. We have so much planned for the years ahead. I can’t wait for you all to read these new titles.”
Pagan said: “I am so thrilled to have acquired an incredible 10 further books from John Scalzi. John is incredibly talented, writing exciting, adventurous and inventive fiction that is always a delight to publish. I always look forward to the wit and verve John brings to his writing, and it will be fantastic to work with Patrick and the Tor US team on these.”
Nielsen commented: “It’s fantastic to know that we’ll be in the John Scalzi business for even more years to come. He’s a remarkable writer and I can’t wait to see what he does next.”
Scalzi won the John W Campbell Award, Hugo Awards, a Locus and Audie Award, and has been nominated for various others. He has also written six New York Times bestsellers.
