Tor, an imprint of Pan Macmillan, has announced the ‘thrilling’ acquisition of two new novels by T Kingfisher. Editorial director Sophie Robinson acquired UK and British Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, to Hemlock & Silver, plus one more novel, from Helen Breitwieser at Cornerstone Literary. Executive editor Lindsey Hall acquired US rights for Tor US.
Hemlock & Silver is a dark reimagining of Snow White and follows the main character Anja after she is summoned to treat a mysterious illness afflicting the king’s daughter.
The synopsis continues: “She finds herself against the clock, desperate to track down the source of the poison killing Princess Snow. But the chance discovery of a strange alternate world inside a magic mirror leads Anja to darker discoveries, including what really happened to Snow’s dead sister, Rose, and why their mother seemingly went mad and cut out her heart. Aided by a taciturn bodyguard, a narcissistic cat, and a late Renaissance understanding of the scientific method, Anja must navigate the mysteries of the mirror world before the dark queen that dwells within rises to threaten them all.”
T Kingfisher is the pen-name of Ursula Vernon, from North Carolina, who is also the author of children’s books and comics. She has been nominated for the World Fantasy and the Eisner, and has won the Hugo, Sequoyah, Nebula, Alfie, WSFA, Coyotl and Ursa Major awards, as well as a number of Junior Library Guild selections.
Robinson said: “Full of delightful charm, trademark snark and unsettling horror, Hemlock & Silver is T Kingfisher at her absolute best. And it’s the only novel I’ve read where I’ve wanted to be more like a narcissistic cat. Readers are in for a treat and it’s a privilege to welcome T Kingfisher to Tor UK.”
Kingfisher said: “I’m deeply delighted to be working with Tor UK on this project, and thrilled to bring more of my weird little stories to a UK audience.”
Tor UK will publish Hemlock & Silver on 21st August 2025.
