Torva has pre-empted Thinking Four Ways: How to Connect with Anyone Using Brain Science by biological anthropologist Dr Helen Fisher.
Senior commissioning editor Lucy Oates pre-empted UK and Commonwealth rights from Cathryn Summerhayes at Curtis Brown on behalf of Christy Fletcher and Georgia Bodnar at UTA. North American rights have been sold to Knopf at PRH, with Brazilian rights going to Sextante, Italian to Corbacci, Romanian to Bookzone, Spanish to Paidós (Grupo Planeta), Dutch to Meulenhoff Boekerij and Taiwanese to Spark Press.
The synopsis for the book, which will be published by Torva in spring 2025, says: "We have long hailed ‘emotional intelligence’ as the ticket to victory at work and love. But Dr Fisher reveals that only by harnessing the power of four forms of natural acumen can we truly understand ourselves, and connect, influence and inspire others – as well as build more effective teams, trigger innovation, sell and lead successfully.
"The culmination of decades of pioneering research using fMRI brain scanning and myriad other scientific data, Thinking Four Ways discusses these four foundational styles of ‘natural intelligence’, which we all express in different degrees. Each basic thinking style – which Dr Fisher calls ‘Creative’, ‘Managerial’, ‘Strategic’ and ‘Diplomatic’ intelligence – is associated with a specific brain system and associated with a specific constellation of key personality traits."
It adds: "These four foundational ways of thinking evolved millions of years ago; and they play striking roles in love, business and politics today. Drawing from new findings across neuroscience and biology, Thinking Four Ways enables readers to understand themselves and others on a far deeper level, then shows them how to connect with anyone – naturally."
Oates said: "Like so many other readers, I find books which offer an element of self-categorisation completely irresistible. But Thinking Four Ways offers so much more. This is a big-idea, popular science book on four fundamental types of intelligence, which revolutionises the way we think about ourselves and others. Filled with original research and brilliant storytelling, it is at once endlessly insightful and immeasurably useful."
Fisher added: "Researching this book has given me a far richer understanding of myself, my friends and family, my colleagues and clients, and even what’s in the news. It’s given me a reliable new tool for understanding the world around me."
