Transworld has acquired How to be the Grown Up by clinical psychologist Dr Martha Deiros Collado.
Kate Fox, deputy publishing director, bought world rights from Carly Cook and Francesca Zampi at The Found. It will be published by Bantam in February 2024.
Fox said: “Ever since I caught sight of Dr Martha’s authoritative yet deeply empathetic posts on Instagram, I knew that we had to publish her. She has a wonderful way of distilling her knowledge and experience into accessible strategies with wit, warmth and boundless energy and I know she’ll make a huge difference to parents’ lives.”
The synopsis reads: “How to be the Grown Up will cover subjects such as redefining what family means today and making sense of how we were parented ourselves. Martha wants this book to help parents examine their own patterns – both healthy and unhealthy – and offer strategies underpinned by science to help us connect fully with our children, learning more about ourselves along the way.”
Dr Deiros Collado added: “As a clinical psychologist one of my greatest learnings is that children are not problems that need to be fixed. They are unique human beings that need to be understood. I want parents to know some basic facts about child development, to make sense of what is going inside their child’s mind and have an evidence-based toolkit of ideas and strategies to guide them in making the right choices for their child. Parenting is a lifelong experience, and my hope is that this book will help adults put themselves in children’s shoes so they can work together to move through challenges while feeling connected and safe in the parent-child relationship, not just for the childhood years but for a lifetime.”
