Transworld has acquired Family Politics, the new novel from comedy writer John O’Farrell, for publication in March 2024.
Bill Scott-Kerr acquired British Commonwealth rights from Georgia Garrett at RCW in a two-book deal.
The publisher described the book as “an antidote for our divided times" and “a hilarious and warm-hearted satire about understanding and acceptance”.
The synopsis reads: “All across Britain, a generation of grown-up children are graduating from university, moving back in to their old bedrooms and showing their gratitude by berating their parents for their out-of-date politics.
"But for high-profile left-wingers, Emma and Eddie Hughes, the return of their only child is a far greater challenge than they ever could have anticipated. Young Dylan had warned them there was something personal he needed to tell them, but nothing could have prepared his right-on parents for the shocking revelation he delivers. Their son is a Conservative.”
O’Farrell is the author of five previous novels including The Man Who Forgot His Wife as well as two political memoirs, Things Can Only Get Better and Things Can Only Get Worse (all Doubleday). He has also written musicals, including “Something Rotten”, the adaptation of “Mrs Doubtfire” and “Just For One Day: The Live Aid Musical” due to open in 2024. He is also the co-writer of “Chicken Run 2: Dawn of the Nugget”.
Scott Kerr said: “After losing him to Broadway, it is such a pleasure to be reading John O’Farrell the novelist once again. A master of the excruciating comic set-piece, John has an eye for the nuances of both family politics and real politics. No-one can skewer political pomposity quite like he can while suggesting the reasonable (socialist) middle way. Family Politics is the perfect mix of his talents combining acute social observation with caustic humour and political insider knowledge.”
