Transworld is set to publish a memoir from Top Boy star Ashley Walters. Editorial director Henry Vines acquired world rights to Always Winning from Paul Stevens at Independent Talent.
In the book, Ashley opens up about his "turbulent past" and writes candidly about his childhood, as well as his battles with identity, addiction, family and fame.
Walters was born on a London council estate and grew up surrounded by drug and gang culture, with his father in and out of prison. He found solace in the performing arts, but still could not escape the environment, and was stabbed in the neck at 15, had a gun held to his head at 18 and sentenced to 18 months in prison at the age of 20.
The synopsis states: "Always Winning is the framework Ashley developed to turn his life around and set himself on course to a more positive, fulfilled existence. Revealed for the first time in this book, explored through powerful stories from his life and career, he shares the principles of this philosophy and shows how anyone can use them to overcome their own challenges, helping them to align a true sense of purpose with inner happiness and personal success and fulfilment."
Walters said: "What an honour to share my journey with the people who helped me get here! I’m no life guru, but I’ve learned we all hold the key to change – this book is my how, why and what. Huge thanks to the incredible team at Transworld and my powerhouse co-writer, Chris Isaie, for bringing this to life."
Vines said: "Always Winning is a very special book, written from the heart by one of the most influential Black British artists of his generation. Full of honesty, genuine wisdom and universal life lessons, it will empower so many readers to overcome challenges in their own lives."
Always Winning by Ashley Walters will be published in hardback, e-book and audiobook on 29th May 2025.
