Transworld has unveiled Terry Hayes’ second novel, The Year of the Locust, scheduled for publication on 9th November 2023.
The Year of the Locust is the second novel in a two-book deal Bill Scott-Kerr negotiated with William Morris in 2008. Transworld acquired UK and Commonwealth rights and the author’s agent is Jay Mandel. The first novel in the deal was I Am Pilgrim, which was published in 2014.
The book’s synopsis reads: “If, like Kane, you’re a Denied Access Area spy for the CIA, then boundaries have no meaning. Your function is to go in, do whatever is required, and get out again – by whatever means necessary. You know when to run, when to hide – and when to shoot.
“But some places don’t play by the rules. Some places are too dangerous, even for a man of Kane’s experience. The badlands where the borders of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan meet are such a place – a place where violence is the only way to survive.
“Kane travels there to exfiltrate a man with vital information for the safety of the West, but instead he meets an adversary who will take the world to the brink of extinction. A frightening, clever, vicious man with blood on his hands and vengeance in his heart…”
Scott-Kerr said: “There is little in publishing terms that will give me more pleasure than releasing Terry’s new book. He is one of the great storytellers of contemporary thriller fiction and certainly not the sort of writer to rest on his laurels, even after writing such a classic as I Am Pilgrim.”
Hayes is a former journalist and a multi-award-winning screenwriter. He wrote screenplays for, among others, “Mad Max 2: Road Warrior”, “Dead Calm”, “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome”, “Payback”, “From Hell” and “Vertical Limit”.
He said: “It’s the 10th anniversary of the publication of I Am Pilgrim which to my eternal gratitude found a huge audience around the world. To my great relief I have now completed my new novel which has been a far longer journey than I anticipated. To say that it’s epic is something of an understatement.”
