Trapeze, an imprint of Orion, has acquired the rights to the “incisive” debut by journalist and campaigner Adele Zeynep Walton. Katie Packer, editorial director, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Megan Staunton at Bergstrom Studio to Logging Off: The Human Cost of Our Digital World.
The book will publish in hardback, audio and ebook on 27th March 2025.
Walton lost her sister to online harms on the darker side of the internet, which motivated her to “analyse the technology we now take for granted”. In Logging Off Walton delves into the complexities of our digital double lives and addresses the pervasive anxiety and discontent afflicting digital generations, highlighting the links between online vulnerabilities and lived realities.
Packer said: “The real-world implications of digital tech is on everyone’s minds, and in Logging Off Adele Zeynep Walton assesses the impact and cost of our lives online. Compelling, enlightening and passionate and covering key issues such as AI, social media and our mental health and online misogyny, this book will make you re-evaluate and rewire your relationship with the digital world for good, and shares a variety of ways we can disconnect and unplug so we don’t lose sight of our humanity.”
Walton said: “As a Gen Z who has grown up online and a freelance journalist who has made a career from my digital skills, I’ve seen how incredible the online world can be in changing lives. But in the same breath, I’ve experienced the worst kind of loss that comes as a direct result of a digital world that is boundless, unregulated and unchallenged. With the growing hype around artificial intelligence, it’s more urgent than ever that we ensure that the digital world is safe and empowering for all. Technological innovation can no longer be something that is done to us by tech bros and CEOs – it must be something we, the users, co-create.”
