Cath Burke, deputy managing director of Little, Brown Book Group, has acquired world rights in Trees in Winter directly from printmaker Richard Shimell.
Publication is planned for 24th October 2024 as a Sphere hardback, e-book and audiobook.
A former journalist, Shimell began printmaking 13 years ago after a chance conversation over the garden fence and now sells his prints across the world. His book will be both a personal memoir around the healing properties of the British landscape and walking within it, especially during the coldest season, and also about the joy of learning a craft and practising it.
Burke said: “This beautiful book will feature over 30 of Richard’s stunning prints of winter trees with text describing Richard’s own journey of connecting with nature throughout his life and now also through his printmaking. All the prints in the book were created in Richard’s studio on the wooded slopes of Dartmoor National Park and we can’t wait to share Richard’s inspiring story and his incredible work with book lovers everywhere.”
Shimell added: “Writing a book was on my bucket list of things I hoped to achieve before I was 60 and I’m delighted to be doing it with the wonderful team at Little, Brown.”
The cover will feature a wrap-around image of Shimell’s print “I Have Lived a Thousand Storms” based on a tree in a field near Ashburton, very close to Shimell’s home.
Shimell said: “I gave the print that title because it’s obviously at least a few hundred years old and I was imagining what it had seen and what it had survived… maybe three storms a year for more than 300 years.”
