Viking has acquired author Laurence Rees’ new book The Nazi Mind, a narrative history of "what made Nazi leaders and their supporters take the actions they did".
Publishing director Daniel Crewe secured UK and Commonwealth rights from Michael Dean at Andrew Nurnberg Associates. The book will be published in hardback and e-book on 30th January to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and Holocaust Memorial Day. Public Affairs will publish the book in North America.
"How could the SS have committed the crimes they did?", the synopsis asks. It adds: "In The Nazi Mind, bestselling historian Laurence Rees seeks answers to some of the most perplexing questions surrounding the Second World War and the Holocaust. Ultimately, he delves into the darkness to explain how and why these people were capable of committing the worst crime in the history of the world."
Crewe said: "I’m thrilled to be working once again with Laurence Rees, and The Nazi Mind is, like everything he writes, fascinating, thought-provoking and compelling to read. As a consequence of Laurence’s unique experience of meeting former Nazis – including perpetrators of appalling crimes – and his decades of work on the subject, he has written a ground-breaking new history."
Rees has also written other books on the Second World War, including The Holocaust: A New History (Viking). He is a former Head of BBC TV history programmes and was a visiting senior fellow in the International History Department at the London School of Economics. He has won a British Book Award, a BAFTA, a George Foster Peabody award and two Emmys, as well as various other awards.
He added: "It’s terrific to be working with Daniel and the Viking team once again. It’s always a privilege to be published by them. This is book I’ve longed to write; it’s the culmination of more than 30 years of making television documentaries and writing about the Nazis and I believe it offers something genuinely original."
