Viking has landed an “urgent” guide to migration by Professor Hein de Haas.
Alpana Sajip, assistant editor, acquired world English rights to How Migration Really Works: A Factful Guide to the Most Divisive Issue in Politics from Tom Killingbeck at A M Heath in an exclusive submission. Translation rights have been sold in Dutch (Het Spectrum), French (Albin Michel), German (S Fischer Verlag) and Spanish (Ediciones Peninsula). Viking plans to publish in hardback, e-book and audio in September 2023.
The synopsis says: “Migration has been arguably the most divisive issue on the geopolitical stage for more than a decade – one that raises high hopes, and inspires deep fears. From governments announcing harsh crackdowns to stem the perceived ‘flood’ of immigrants taking away jobs and resources, to businesses and activists arguing that we need immigrants to boost growth and innovation, debates on immigration have reached fever pitch – and so has political and media fearmongering. But what are the facts behind the headlines?”
Sajip said: “I’m thrilled to be working with world-leading migration expert Hein de Haas on this revelatory book. There could not be a more urgent one for our times – How Migration Really Works will drain the poison that has infected the debate on migration, presenting it not as a problem to be solved, nor as a solution to a problem, but as it really is. It will be essential reading for anyone who wants to engage confidently in the conversation around this most hotly contested issue.”
De Haas added: “As migration debates have grown increasingly toxic, I strongly believe that we are in dire need of a new, non-ideological and evidence-based vision that challenges conventional wisdom and tells a fundamentally different story about migration. I am absolutely thrilled that I have found such an excellent publishing house and an enthusiastic editor who share my conviction that this book is more urgent than ever.”
