Viking will release Homegoing author Yaa Gyasi’s “dazzling” new novel Transcendent Kingdom in August 2020, following a family living through the “most urgent of times” in contemporary America.
Gyasi’s 2016 debut Homegoing won huge praise from the critics and went on to sell 66,634 print copies in the UK for books for £551,000 through Nielsen.
The publisher said her new book “is as moving and illuminating about modern America as Homegoing was about America’s past”. It said: “Exploring themes of science and faith, love, and addiction Transcendent Kingdom is a family saga of the tangled web of relationships; mother and daughter, brother and sister, father and son, and their legacies on the body, and the mind.”
Knopf will publish in the US in July, with Viking following suit in August. Gyasi will also be visiting the UK for publication.
Her publisher Mary Mount said: “Yaa Gyasi is one of America’s most original and compelling voices. A novel from her is an event indeed and Transcendent Kingdom is one of the most moving novels I’ve read in years – it explores such huge themes as addiction and immigration, how families connect and are torn apart, all with the incredibly intimate and empathetic voice we have come to expect from this great writer. I cannot wait for Yaa’s many fans around the world to read it.”
