Viking has signed How to Really be a Brit: The Unofficial Citizenship Test from the “brilliant mind” behind the Twitter account @NoContextBrits.
Senior commissioning editor Shyam Kumar acquired world all language rights directly from the author. The book will be published in hardback and e-book on 26th October 2023.
How to Really be a Brit offers 500 questions which take in “every aspect of UK life” in an unofficial citizenship test.
The synopsis reads: “Being from the UK is special. So special the Home Office makes you take an exam in order to stay here forever. According to the Life in the UK Test, more commonly known as the British citizenship test, you should know highly relevant facts such as which king lost the Battle of Boyne and what Sir Frank Whittle invented in the 1930s. Not exactly riveting dinner party conversation. If only there was an alternative test that wasn’t stuck revelling in past glories...one that was fun, irreverent and unafraid to offer a glimpse of real life in the UK.”
Kumar said: “Full of mundane trivia, unexplained omissions and the unmistakable whiff of imperial nostalgia, the current British citizenship test isn’t fit for purpose. What if there was a funnier and altogether more relatable version of the test that quizzed you on the sort of things modern multicultural Brits actually care about – one that didn’t shy away from some of the uncomfortable truths about our inglorious past.”
NoContextBrits added: “I started the @NoContextBrits account as a celebration of all things great about British culture and have since amassed more than 1.7 million followers. Unlike the current citizenship test, I’m not afraid to be sarcastic and self-deprecating – two quintessential British traits – about the things that aren’t so great about life in the UK.”
