Viper has signed four more books from Janice Hallett, author of The Appeal and The Twyford Code (Viper), in a six-figure deal.
Miranda Jewess, publishing director at the Serpent’s Tail’s crime imprint, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights plus audio for the books from Gaia Banks at Sheil Land Associates for a "significant" sum.
Hallett’s debut novel, The Appeal, has sold more than 250,000 copies across all formats according to the publisher and won the Crime Writers’ Association Debut Dagger. It was a Waterstones Thriller of the Month, Sunday Times Book of the Year, and has been optioned by ABC Studios. Her second novel, The Twyford Code, has sold 150,000 copies to date, Viper says, with the books selling in 17 territories. Hallett’s third novel, The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels, will be published in January 2023 with a fourth book to follow as part of a previous deal.
Jewess said: “Janice’s star continues to rise with each stunning thriller. She’s redefined how the crime novel can be written, to the point where I’m now being sent submissions pitched as being like The Appeal. It’s an incredible achievement in such a short time.
“Every time a new Janice manuscript hits my desk I can hardly contain my excitement. I’m delighted that Viper will be publishing her for years to come."
Hallett commented: “I am beyond thrilled to be on board with Viper for four more books. Miranda Jewess and her editorial team have met every challenge my unconventional narratives have thrown at them. With their flair and creativity they’ve made the publishing process as fun as it is inventive. I can’t wait to see what we all come up with next!”
