W H Allen has clinched what it has called a "jaw-dropping account of how the law can change the powerful" by the Good Law Project founder Jolyon Maugham.
Jamie Joseph, editorial director and head of W H Allen, acquired world rights exclusively from Antony Topping at Greene & Heaton. Publication of Bringing Down Goliath is scheduled for 27th April.
"Jolyon Maugham and Good Law Project have been leading the charge to call out and push back against a government increasingly inclined to run roughshod over our rights and the rule of law," W H Allen said. "Whether successfully suing the government over the unlawful proroguing of parliament, digging deep into the ongoing scandal of PPE procurement contracts or challenging Big Tech tax loopholes, Jolyon has been using the power of the law to fight for the rights of ordinary people."
The publisher added: "For the first time, Jolyon tells his own story—his motivation and his journey to dedicate himself to legal activism—and outlines why he believes the power of the courts is under more threat than ever from an increasingly authoritarian state."
The Good Law Project is a not-for-profit campaign organisation primarily funded by the public. Maugham founded it in 2017 without a single member of staff. It has gone on to raise millions of pounds to fund strategic litigation and win landmark constitutional cases.
Originally training as a tax barrister, Maugham became a Queen’s Counsel in 2015. He is also an honorary professor at the University of Durham.
Joseph said: “This book is incredibly revealing about how power in the UK really works and how those at the top try to get away with everything they can. It’s rare to have a book that feels so intimate and personal while also offering fascinating revelations about corruption and justice.”
Maugham said: “The perspective I have on how the law is used—and abused—and its relationship with political and cultural power is a personal one. I’ve felt very lucky, as I’ve worked to get that perspective on to the page, to have an editor and a team who have given me counsel and support.”
